Sometimes it is difficult to know what to do about a problem. Therapy involves evaluating problems, identifying strengths, and using them to develop solutions to the problems with a trained therapist. I use cognitive-behavioral and other therapeutic techniques to help your child learn to cope with difficulties. I work both with the child, and when appropriate (especially with younger children) with parents, on how to coach the child to use these strategies. Sometimes the entire family is involved.
Reasons to consider consusting a therapist:
- Emotions that are pervasive and distressing, or that interfere with functioning:
- Worry
- Sadness
- Fear
- Difficulty cooperating with others
- Difficulty separating from parents that is not age-appropriate
- School refusal
- Difficulty coping with stressors
- Social withdrawal or isolation
- Being the victim of bullying, or bullying other children
- Decreased interest in previously enjoyed activities
- Overly aggressive behavior (such as biting, kicking, or hitting)
- Persistent insomnia or sleeping too much
- Difficulty coping with a serious, acute, or chronic illness
