What is Neuropsychological Evaluation?
Neuropsychological evaluation measures an individual’s ability to engage in mental processes necessary for functioning in school and in daily life.
Depending on the purpose of the evaluation it may include: Assessment of verbal comprehension and reasoning, perceptual reasoning, verbal memory and learning, visual memory and learning, academic skills, attention, working memory, impulse control, problem solving, visual perception, fine motor skills, speed of information processing, language processing, and adaptive skills.
What is the evaluation like?
Your child will complete a number of assessment activities in a one-on-one setting with Dr. Hilsman. Your child may answer questions, try to remember things, solve problems, complete puzzles, etc. There are a wide variety of activities, and most children enjoy them. We will work at the pace and for the length of time that fits your child. Parents also participate in an interview and complete questionnaires about their child.
How does it help?
You will receive a thorough report of your child’s strengths and weaknesses, any diagnoses, with extensive recommendations and resources on how to help your child. You can learn how work effectively with school personnel to advocate for your child in IEP meetings, creating 504 plans, and working with your child’s teacher.
What is therapy?
Sometimes it is difficult to know what to do about a problem. Therapy involves evaluating problems, identifying strengths, and using them to develop solutions to the problems with a trained therapist. I use cognitive-behavioral and other therapeutic techniques to help your child learn to cope with difficulties. I work both with the child, and when appropriate (especially with younger children) with parents, on how to coach the child to use these strategies. Sometimes the entire family is involved.
Why should I consider therapy for my child?
- Your child isn’t making appropriate academic progress
- Your child can’t focus attention at an age-appropriate level
- Identification of Learning Disabilities
- Qualification for Gifted Programs
- Qualification for Test Accommodations on College Board Examinations
- Early Entrance to Kindergarten
- Qualification for Services with the Department of Developmental Disabilities
- Independent Evaluations from the School District
